Dr. Peter J. AikenThe Central York Board of School Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Peter J. Aiken as Superintendent of Schools following the retirement of Dr. Michael Snell. The Board will vote to formally approve Dr. Aiken at the board meeting on Monday, September 13, 2021. Dr. Aiken will begin his service later this fall.

Dr. Aiken received his bachelor’s degree in English Education from Geneva College. From there, he obtained a master’s degree in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, then capped off his educational career by earning a doctorate from Immaculata University.

"I look forward to joining the team at Central York,” Dr. Aiken said. "Central York really is an excellent district, and I want to build upon the tremendous work that has been done by current and previous leaders in the district. I plan to build sustained partnerships with all district stakeholders that will design a bold future for the district, and help kids be wildly excited about school every day!”

Dr. Aiken comes to Central York from the Manheim Central School District, where he has served as Superintendent of Schools since 2016. Prior to holding that position, he was Assistant Superintendent for over two years in the district. He has also served as Middle School Principal and Virtual School Director in the Conrad Weiser Area School District, and as an Assistant Principal in the Pequea Valley School District. Dr. Aiken began his teaching career in the Blair Middle School in Norfolk Virginia, before coming back to Pennsylvania to teach 12th grade English and serve as the district’s Department Chair in the Mars Area School District. He was also honorably discharged after a three-year tour of duty with the United States Army Reserves.

“The Board is thrilled to have landed Dr. Aiken, and we are very excited to bring him into the district,” Board Search Committee Chair Jodi Grothe said. “He really impressed us as a strong relationship builder, and the candidate with the expertise and temperament to boldly move our district forward, all while addressing the current challenges facing the district. He has an almost palpable passion for students, boundless energy and an engaging persona, which will be invaluable as we collaborate with the school community to chart the district’s strategic direction. We believe Dr. Aiken is an excellent fit for Central York,” Grothe added.

“We also want to express our deepest appreciation to Mr. Ryan Billet for serving as acting superintendent during this transition. Ryan has earned our highest accolades for serving Central York so effectively, and we are convinced he will execute the duties of superintendent exceptionally well as we prepare for Dr. Aiken’s arrival. Finally, the board recognizes -- and extends its genuine gratitude – to Dr. Michael Snell for his many years of dedication to the students of Central York. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Grothe said.

The Central York Board of School Directors engaged in a comprehensive search process and interviewed numerous highly qualified candidates. Board members appreciated the opinions shared by district stakeholders, which were quite helpful in the interview process, and will be reviewed again while developing goals for the superintendent’s annual evaluation. In the coming months, Dr. Aiken will be executing his entry plan, which will include getting to know students, staff and community members, and listen to the educational issues and concerns that are most important to them.
