Grade 1 Music

Course Overview

In 1st grade we learn to read and write music. We begin to understand that music has duration: long and short sounds that are shown by music notes. These sounds can move up, down or repeat. They correlate with how our voice moves when we sing.

Course Big Ideas

  • Creating: First graders continue to engage in the process of composing and improvising music. They explore how to express their ideas and emotions through musical creation, using both voice and instruments.
  • Performing: This theme emphasizes participation in singing, playing instruments, and movement activities. First graders are encouraged to perform individually and as part of a group, fostering teamwork and confidence in their musical abilities.
  • Responding: Students are taught to listen critically to various pieces of music, express their reactions, and describe what they hear. This theme promotes active engagement with music and helps develop their analytical skills.
  • Connecting: First graders begin to make connections between music and other subjects, cultures, and their own lives. They learn about the role of music in different contexts and how it relates to other forms of expression.
