- 10.4.6. A. Identify and engage in moderate to vigorous physical activities that contribute to physical fitness and health.
- 10.4.6. B. Explain the effects of regular participation in moderate to vigorous physical activities on the body systems.
- 10.4.6.C. Identify and apply ways to monitor and assess the body’s response to moderate to vigorous physical activity. (Heart rate monitoring, Checking blood pressure, Fitness assessment)
- 10.5.6.D. Describe and apply the principles of exercise to the components of health- related and skill-related fitness. (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition)
Know
- How to measure heart rate before, during and after physical activity.
- How to locate a pulse (for example at the wrist or neck) and count beats per minute (or a portion and multiply), and understand that heart rate rises during moderate to vigorous activity.
- What the heart rates numbers indicate: e.g., a higher heart rate shows the body is working harder.
- The five health-related components: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
- Health-related components help people stay healthy, perform everyday tasks, and reduce the risk of chronic illness.
- The FITT principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type of exercise) and how it applies to physical fitness.
Understanding/Key Learning
Do
- Participate regularly in moderate to vigorous activities to make the heart, lungs, and muscles stronger and to stay healthy and fit.
- Locate their pulse (e.g., at the wrist or neck), count beats for a set period (e.g., 15 or 30 seconds) and calculate their heart rate before, during, and/or after an activity.
- Complete a simple fitness assessment (such as how quickly their heart rate returns toward resting after activity, or how long they sustain moderate-vigorous activity) and record the results to track how their body responds.
- Identify the components of the FITT principle within fitness stations.
