Course Description
This course will refine skills about the production of art while utilizing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students will plan, consider, and apply a variety of techniques, skills, and media to produce a desired outcome in works of art. Students will comply with studio expectations and rules of materials and equipment. Students will participate in art critiques. Students will develop an appreciation of art through discussions on specific artworks, artists, historical contexts, and cultural meanings. Students will re-evaluate and refine their individual aesthetic while producing works of art.
Course Big Ideas
- Use the Elements of Art (color, form, shape, line, space, texture, and value) to create works of art.
- Use the Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis/focal point, movement/rhythm, proportion/scale, repetition, and unity/harmony) to create works of art.
- Maintain expectations and rules while responsibly using art materials and equipment.
- Refine skills and abilities with various media for the production of artworks.
- Critique art.
- Develop an appreciation for art through deeper discussions on specific artworks, artists, historical contexts, and cultural meanings.
- Identify aesthetic value, characteristics, and meanings in specific works of art.

- How do you anticipate the best material to conceptualize your idea into a work of art?

- How can you characterize artwork using art vocabulary, historical context, and/or cultural meaning?
