Hayshire Happenings: First Grade Learns About Vermicomposting 🪱
Hayshire had visitors. They taught us about vermicomposting. Vermicomposting has to do with worms. They eat squishy apples. They eat newspaper. They make soil that is good for planting any type of flowers or trees.
We made a worm house. We started with a cup. Then we added a sponge so the worms wouldn’t escape from the holes at the bottom of the cup. We wore a glove to add dirt. The helpers added water. We added worms and mushy apples. We had a lid on top so the worms wouldn’t go out the top.
The worms moved and wiggled. We didn’t observe them eating the apple. Maybe they did later. We learned that worms lay eggs. The eggs are like little yellow, shiny balls. Inside is the baby worm!
It was really cool and fun. We put our worm houses on the shelf. We made worm journals. We asked questions about worms and answered the questions about the worms! At dismissal, we took them home.
