Hayshire Happenings: Designing Hats 👒

Hayshire Happenings: Designing Hats 👒

We worked together at our tables to make hats. We could work by ourselves, or we could work with a friend. We made hats after we watched a video by Doug. He said to pretend we were on a ship and it crashed. He challenged us to make a hat. We could use string, tape, a paper bag, a paper plate, a foam plate, tin foil, and paper towels. That’s all.

We had to understand the properties of the materials. For example, the paper bag is not really that soft. It doesn’t block water. The bottom of the paper bag stays in shape and has pointy edges that make a rectangle.

We taped the materials together to make hats. Everyone made different hats. Some hats were more sturdy.

Bennett’s hat could fall apart kind of easily. He would make the string a little bit tighter because when you put the string around your neck, you still need to balance the hat on your head. It fell off easily. He did a good job of making it foldable.

Wyatt started his hat with a plate. The plate went on the head. The bag went on the plate, and paper towels went on the bag. He didn’t know it was extendable. It could fit different kinds of heads. He would add tape to improve the ripped part of his hat. He is proud that he made it extendable and that he put a string through the ripped part to make it fit on the head.

Our class did pretty good. Our teacher had to help us with a few things, like tightening the string to put on our heads. Everything else, the class thought of and made. We were creative, and we met Doug’s challenge!

We need to understand how materials work so we can make new things out of them!
