Budget Information

CYSD Educational Service Center

Budget planning at Central York School District begins in the fall, when the Pennsylvania Department of Education releases the Act 1 Index. This index sets the maximum amount school districts can raise property taxes without needing voter approval.

During this time, district administrators begin developing a preliminary budget, projecting expenditures based on factors such as student enrollment, staffing, existing contracts, anticipated state and federal funding, and our local tax base.

By winter, the District determines whether it will stay within the Act 1 Index or apply for exceptions as allowed under state law.

In the spring, the administration works closely with the school board to refine a proposed final budget. This proposed budget is tentatively approved and made available for public review and feedback.

After the review period, the final budget—which may include updates based on community input—is formally adopted by the school board. By law, all Pennsylvania public school districts must adopt their budget by June 30 each year.

The Central York School District’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.
