Grade 5 Social Studies Overview

Course Description

The fifth grade social studies course introduces students to United States history with the thirteen colonies and progresses through early conflicts such as The French and Indian War. Students examine the causes of the American Revolution and its influence on today’s democracy.

  • It is necessary to understand and actively take part in all aspects of government in order to ensure personal rights and freedoms. 
  • It is important to understand how the desire for personal liberties, independence and justice have shaped our world. 
  • The differences in geography, religious beliefs and culture influence the way people interact with one another. 
  • The patterns of land settlement involving conflict have impacted history and continue to influence current events. 
  • There are several ways in which citizens can contribute to and find success in a free market economy.
