Volunteer Opportunities

Becoming a Volunteer with Central York School District

We are aware that there are many parents/guardians or family members who wish to register to volunteer in our schools in the 2020-2021 school year. Our school and event volunteers are incredibly important to the success of many special activities our students, staff and families anticipate each year.

Unfortunately, given the guidelines for schools to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a likelihood that some of our normal activities and events involving volunteers will not be held during the school day as planned. This will be necessary for the district to comply with guidelines on the number of people in schools/buildings at one time during the day.

We are working on a plan and protocol for reopening our schools and guidance for volunteers in schools and will be available before school reopens.

Please bear this in mind as you consider renewing or applying for clearances at this time. We will share additional communication on this item as soon as it is available.

The Volunteer Registration Process – Effective July 9, 2019

  • Returning parent volunteers with current clearances can re-register as a volunteer for the 2019/2020 school year through the new CYSD Volunteer portal. Please note, if the effective date on your clearances is less than five years old, you have current clearances.  The system will notify you if you attempt to re-register online and have expired clearances.  If that is the case, you will need to re-register in person at the ESC with your new clearance(s) per the instructions below for returning parent volunteers with expired clearances.
  • Returning parent volunteers with expired clearances will complete a Registration Packet, which can be downloaded below or picked up at any school office or the Educational Service Center.  Please bring your completed registration packet, clearances, and your state-issued photo I.D. or driver's license, to the Educational Service Center to complete the Volunteer Registration process.
  • New parent volunteers will complete a Registration Packet, which can be downloaded below or picked up at any school office or the Educational Service Center. Please bring your completed registration packet, clearances, and your state-issued photo I.D. or driver's license, to the Educational Service Center to complete the Volunteer Registration process.
  • Upon completion of the registration process (whether online or in person at the ESC), volunteers will be entered into the District’s Volunteer database and will receive a Volunteer Badge for the new school year.
  • All Athletic Volunteers will require School Board approval before serving.  If you wish to serve as an Athletic Volunteer, please contact our Athletic Director to begin the Athletic Volunteer registration process.  Please note that returning Athletic Volunteers are not able to re-register through the new online portal.

The following procedures will also remain the same for all volunteers:

  • Volunteers must check-in at a school’s main office prior to each volunteer visit.
    • Volunteers must wear their badge clearly displayed on their person while volunteering.
    • Volunteer status is good for only one year.  You must re-register as a volunteer each school year.

Important Information on Changes to the District’s Volunteer Program - Effective July 1, 2015

Central York School District is grateful for the hundreds of parents/guardians and community members who volunteer your time and share your talents with our schools each year.

We value your commitment and want to make you aware of some important information on changes to state laws regarding volunteers who work with children in a setting such as our District.

These laws have sparked changes to our policies and procedures to ensure we are in compliance as required by the state.

State Law Changes to Volunteer Definition/Clearance Process

New state laws have expanded the definition of a volunteer and changed the clearance requirements for those wishing to volunteer in education, non-profit organizations, churches and recreation groups, to name a few. The main changes include the following:

    • New clearances are required every 5 (five) years
    • Volunteers should participate in “Mandated Reporter” training

Changes to District Volunteer Program Due to State Law

In order to be in compliance with the state law, Central York School District has made the following changes to its Volunteer Program. These changes will take effect July 1, 2015:

Volunteers must now renew their Volunteer Status Annually and will receive a District-issued badge good for one school year.

The District will not reimburse for clearances.

Important Notice: Governor Wolf Waives Fees for Volunteers
Effective July 25, 2015, the fees for the PA Child Abuse and the PA Criminal Clearances will be waived for volunteers.  (The cost for the FBI clearance is still in effect for those who must submit that clearance, as it is a federal clearance.)
