Start of the school day information
Central York School District's 2018-2022 Comprehensive (Strategic) Plan directed the administration to research and develop a proposal on reversing (or changing) the start of the school day for secondary and elementary school students.
This Comprehensive Plan Goal was created in response to nationwide studies and information from health care professionals suggesting lack of adequate sleep was a significant concern for secondary students throughout the country.
Throughout 2018-2019, a District committee comprised of faculty/staff, parents, community members, administrators, students and School Board members conducted research and conversation on this topic.
At the October 29, 2019 Fall Town Meeting, the District shared a presentation on the findings, as well as the recently released Joint Government Commission's findings on this topic.
The Town Meeting Presentation shares potential "flipped" schedules, as well as potential "pushed back" schedules for both elementary and secondary students. Considerations or areas that may be impacted with such a change were also detailed in the presentation.
(Please note that these are all PROPOSED scenarios to enable discussion and inform the Board and public and that no decision has been made at this time.)

What's Next:
The District is still in the process of gathering research and feedback to develop a proposal to share with the School Board for consideration.
Survey
All stakeholders - parents/guardians, faculty/staff and secondary students - will receive a survey in mid-November. This survey will ask for feedback on many aspects of a possible change to the start times for Central York Schools. Survey results will be shared with the School Board and public in early January 2020.
Special School Board Meeting
A special School Board meeting on this topic will be held January 21, 2020, at 6:30PM at the Educational Services Center. This is a public meeting, and all are welcome to attend to learn more and share feedback on this topic.
School Board Discussion item
In February 2020, the School Board will have a public discussion on the Start of the School Day research, survey results and potential implications for Central York School District. The School Board will then determine next steps.
Share Your Feedback
Surveys will be sent to all stakeholders in mid-November 2019.
If you have a question or concern in advance of that time, please feel free to email the District directly via this link.
